How to Remove Pool Deck Coatings

Eradicating aging, dried paint from a concrete pool deck as not as simple as scrubbing it with detergent and a hard-bristled brush until the paint lifts off the surface. Removing old paint is more complicated, often requiring harsh chemicals that can take a toll on the environment.

Before you begin to remove pool deck coatings with chemicals, it’s crucial to set up run-off dams to prevent the substance from entering the drainage system. It’s also a good idea to contact the city to learn how to dispose of the chemicals safely after completing the process.

Step One: Prep the Area

Start by removing any furniture, toys, or accessories from the pool deck. Once the area is clear, sweep the pool deck to eliminate any dirt or debris clinging to the surface. After that, combine warm water with some soap and use a wide-wired brush to scrub the deck thoroughly.

Allow the area to dry for two to three hours. This should lift some paint off the concrete and make it easier to remove.

Once the area has dried, apply a concrete paint stripper, and give it time to work its magic.

Step Two: Power-Wash the Surface

After the paint stripper takes hold, return to the pool deck and scrub the layers of paint in a test area with the wide-wire brush. If the paint won’t come off easily, use a pressure washer to remove the remaining residue.

Sometimes you will need to repeat the process several times before the paint disappears completely. Continue cleaning the paint off the concrete until it vanishes entirely.

Step Three: Clean the Pool Deck

Finally, use a garden hose to wash away any remaining chemicals or paint stripper from the pool deck. As we stated earlier, many chemicals aren’t environmentally friendly and must not enter the storm drains. In this case, gather the chemicals and dispose of them according to your local regulations.
